“Can't repeat the past? Why of course you can!” This one line alone from Gatsby answers the question of whether or not Gatsby has let go of the past; he can't. Like so many people in this world today, Gatsby lives in the past. He clings to the very hope that some day he will wake up from this nightmare and be in his dream world, the past. In Gatsby's case, he is waiting for the moment when Daisy comes running back to him. The fact that Gatsby still lives in the past shows that he misses the old Daisy, that he still wants to impress her, and that he never stopped loving her.

The moments that Daisy loved Gatsby are the moments he remembers most distinctively and are the moments he recalls and misses the most.
Gatsby also shows that he still wants impress Daisy. In chapter five Daisy and Gatsby reunite for tea. Even though the tea is held at Nick's house, Gatsby does everything in his power to make sure it is perfect. He has to make sure everything from the entrance he makes to the look of the house perfect. Gatsby even sends one of his servants over to mow Nick's grass when Gatsby notices it is tall compared to Gatsby's. The pair meet up at Nick's house, but reluctantly Gatsby shows her his house.
