Gender ideologies of society have greatly affected a woman’s position in the labor force and her body image. An illustration of the is made in Carol Tavris’ article “The Universal Male” and in Judith Lorber’s article, “`Night to His Day’: The Social Construction Of Gender.” The ideology of the male gender as the normal and superior is one that Tavris explains. are unequal. Women are looked at as the “abnormal” (17 Tavris) of the genders. However, there is no essential difference between males and females. The difference lies in how individuals are raised and rewarded for certain actions. A little boy playing with dolls will immediately be told to consider guns or to climb a tree. Tavris illustrates this view of “nothing [being] essential - in the natures of men and women…” by an example of how politics and the UN “have ‘important’ issues (drugs, economics, war) and then ‘women’s issues’ (daycare, birth control, peace).” (17,21 Tavris) This social construction has gone as far to even give a gender notation when the occupation is usually fulfilled by one sex (i.e.: male nurse).
