Gender Roles in Shiloh

Gender roles are the roles that society assigns men and women based on their gender. They especially influence relationship between men and women. Gender roles have been changing in western society in recent decades, and generally have become more flexible. Years ago, women were expected to get married and stay home to raise a family. The man was expected to go out to work to support his family. In the story of “Shiloh” by Bobbie Ann Mason is about a beginning and an end of a marriage. Leroy a recently disabled truck driver now stays at home with his wife Norma Jean. With Leroy home, Norma feels uncomfortable and wants him to get a job. is introduced in the first paragraph of the story “Leroy Moffitt’s wife, Norma Jean, is working on her pectorals. She lifts three-pound dumbbells to warm up, then professes to a twenty-pound barbell. Standing with her legs apart, she reminds Leroy of Wonder Woman” (Mason) While women do participate in weightlifting and bodybuilding, it is still largely a male-dominated activity and carries the image of strength and power. Mason continues to use the image throughout the story. Norma Jean’s interest in bodybuilding started after Leroy broke his leg and received help with physical therapy which involved weightlifting. Norma started the weightlifting the same time with Leroy, but gets more involved by attending body-building class; she too can become physically fit.
