Genetic Engineering
A Jordanian couple tried four times to have a baby and to start a family. All four times resulted in devastating miscarriages, and the two were left wondering if it was even possible to achieve their goals. Finally, in 2005 they had their first baby. However, she was diagnosed with Leigh syndrome (a disorder that affects the developing nervous system), which was the most likely cause for the earlier miscarriages. She died at six years old. They tried again to have another child, but a similarly grim ending was reached - she died after 8 months of life. Just as they were about to give up on their goals, a new scientific development entered their life. That was genetic engineering, a ...

the potential to cure millions of people with diseases or genetic disorders. In the year of 2012 alone, an estimated 38 million people died of non-communicable diseases - that is, diseases that are not infectious. That summed up to a shocking 68% percent of all estimated deaths from that year. (WHO 3) Genetic engineering has the capability to save many of these 38 million people from death, by modifying genes and other cells, or even removing troublesome, dangerous cells to help stop some of the malignant cells from slowly killing off countless people. A clear way for genetic engineering to cure people that is already being theorized would be to cure diseases such as HIV (a lifetime for lifetime that breaks down a person's immune system) by simply removing a gene. According to Eric S. Lander, a professor at Harvard Medical School and MIT, HIV can be cured by "deleting the CCR5 gene, conferring the resistance to HIV carried by the 1% of US people who lack this gene" (Friedman 1). ...

have to be greatly improved in the future, but for now, this represents a great and interesting prospect for cancer treatment in the future. All of these different treatments and ideas project a bright future for disease treatment, but will only be able to be put into effect if genetic engineering is actually allowed.
Furthermore, limited genetic engineering should be allowed as blocking the technology will only lead to it being practiced in underground, unsafe environments. Historically, many examples of this have been seen over the ages. Whether it be marijuana, abortion, or any other thing that was illegalized, all of these share something in common - when something becomes ...
