During the late 1100’s and early 1200’s one man brought all of the nomadic tribes of Mongolia under his rule and through his many conquests, built an empire that was more extensive than that of Alexander the Great. This man was known as (also spelled Chingis) and his armies were among the most feared in the history of warfare. By the time of his death ’s empire stretched across all of Asia and he could claim ownership of land as far west as the Caspian Sea.

Soon, Temujin began to attract followers, form important alliances with other tribes, and was able to build his own army. He employed rigorous training and strict discipline to create a supreme fighting force. He also made sure that they were well equipped and that they did not hesitate to adopt new tactics and weapons. He appointed the officers in his army based on their achievements rather than their family connections. Through this, he gained officers who would remain loyal to him alone.
