of the industrial revolution, most European countries seeked to have a mercantilism economy. Mercantilism is an economy that exports more than it imports. As mercantilism became popular, imperial powers needed to find a new way to obtain raw materials. The desire for wealth and raw materials resulted in the establishment of colonies.

Colonialism is when a county conquers and rules over other regions .Imperial powers divided Africa to benefit their own needs. Political, social and economic system that had been operational for hundreds of years was replaced by foreign systems that were not suited to the many tribal foundation of many African nations. Many of the imperial systems were set up to generate as much wealth as possible the imperial powers without having to benefit the population
