In 1984, George Orwell introduces a new world split into three sections Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. Oceania's government is Big Brother. Everyone who spends their lives there is constantly being watched and controlled by the government. Winston Smith lives in Oceania, he is starting to have a lack of faith in everything that he has been told about the government. He eyeballed a dark-haired girl who works in the Ministry of Truth with him. She one day fakes a fall and slips Winston a note saying, "I love you." In the beginning of the story, you will learn that Winston is not as ignorant and loyal to Big Brother as the other Party members are. He does not double think things and he does not necessarily believe everything he is told, particularly because his job at the Ministry of Truth is redrafting history. He loves his job but he starts to wonder if things were better before the drastic change. He starts to act rebellious by buying a diary at a black market shop to write down his thoughts and memories. In his diary, he openly writes "Down with Big Brother" over and over again showing his hate and mischievous behavior. After we meet Julia we learn that she also, does not approve and thinks only bad of Big Brother. She likes to get involved in rebellious acts.
