Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Gujarat, India, on October 2, 1869 and was assassinated January 1948. He studied law in England and became a Lawyer in Bombay. After not being very successful, he went to work in South Africa. He went back to India in 1915. By this time, he was already known by Indians because of his protest and demonstrations in South Africa.
Gandhi was a man who believed in non-violent protest and peace. When there was an unjust law, he told Indians not to follow it, and to protest peacefully and not retaliate. When there was violence between Hindu’s and Muslims, Gandhi fasted continuously. He fasted until the violence stopped and if it started again, he continued to fast.
