Gossip In Grover’s Corners

This essay will explain the role of Gossip in Thornton Wilder’s “
Our Town”. It will analyze the positive and negative effects of gossip as
seen in the play. This essay will also include support from the play to
substanciate the theories mentioned. First, this essay will talk about the
positive then the negative effects of gossip.
One positive effect of gossip is that it spreads important
information from person to person. It also spreads information that would
not be included in newspapers such as relationships and a birth of a baby.

what is going on so they can help out each other if needed. Gossip builds
strong communities and allows them to function and prosper.
Another positive effect of gossip is that it will force people to
do good things for the community. If they don’t then rumors will start and
you will get a bad name. This is good because you want everyone to be
equaly involved in trying to improve your community. It is just like any
team sport. If everyone doesn’t do their best and help each other out then
the team will suffer as a whole. Gossip will set a standard for everyone
to try to match. You want to achieve this so people don’t think something
is wrong with you.
