John Steinbeck’s the Grapes of Wrath, is a novel which tells a tale of a family and their treacherous migratory experience from Oklahoma to California in search of a solution to their life’s hardships. In the 1930’s a terrible cluster of dust clouds collected over parts of the Midwestern United States, the area formed a triangle shape from Texas to South Dakota and up to the peek of Milwaukee (French 3). These dust clouds came to be none as the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s, a phenomenon which caused many farmers to lose everything they owned, and as a result they where forced to relocate, many migrating to California in search for a better life. the effects of the Dust bowl, and the forced migration were not at all beneficial to the people of this land. The family, which Steinbeck wrote about, although fictional, represented a sample of the thousands of farmers that were forced off their land and into a new part of the country (French 8).
The Joads were a closely-knit family. As the novel opens, Tom Joad, their son, whom was returning from a seven-year jail sentence for manslaughter, rejoins the family. Tom returns home only to discover that home is no longer what he had left four years earlier. His family had moved in with their Uncle John, after the banks had taken away their home. The effects of the Dust bowl are already prevalent as Tom enters the novel. Throughout the trip several characters fade out of the picture, in order not to face what may or may not await them in California. Soon after the death of the grandfather, we are able to see the character of grandma Joad, lose her will to live and she her self slowly fades out of the picture of life as well.
