was some kind of unsurity about the house. The unsurity came true when Tom met Muley Graves, who told Tom that his family had been evicted, and they were staying with Uncle John. Tom and Jim Casy head out to find Tom's family at Uncle John's.

After Tom finds his family at Uncle John's everyone is getting ready for the trip to Cali. Jim Casy asked to accompany the family on their trip so he may also find work. During the trip Grandpa is the first to pass away. It is night when he passed, and it is also still dark when he is laid to rest. It being dark symbolizes that this is a time of sadness or hurt. Shortly after grandpa passes grandma is the next to depart this life. Her death is also at night, which also is a sad time for the family since grandma was the center of the family.
