If you were in debt, you would be sent to a debtor's prison, like Marshalsea Prison. Pip had a debt of "'Hundred and twenty-three pound, fifteen, six, Jeweler's account, I think.'" (Dickens 492) and was arrested and placed in a debtor's prison. Helping escaped convicts was also an awful crime. Pip had met a convict when he was younger in a cemetery. "I fully expected to find a constable in the kitchen waiting to take me up. But not only was there no constable there, but no discovery had yet been made of the robbery" (Dickens 21). Not only did he assist a convict, but he robbed his family for him. Later on in the story, Pip finds out that Estella's mother, Molly was a murderer.
