Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is a story written in Victorian times. It shows many examples of the Victorian lifestyle and Dickens' life. The character that represents the life and times of Charles Dickens is Pip. He is the connection between Great Expectations and Charles Dickens. has a lot to do with the Victorian justice system. His constant encounters with convicts, debt, and crime have gotten him into a lot of trouble. In the Victorian ages debt was taken very seriously. If you were in debt, you would be sent to a debtor's prison, like Marshalsea Prison. Pip had a debt of "'Hundred and twenty-three pound, fifteen, six, Jeweler's account, I think.'" (Dickens 492) and was arrested and placed in a debtor's prison. Helping escaped convicts was also an awful crime. Pip had met a convict when he was younger in a cemetery. "I fully expected to find a constable in the kitchen waiting to take me up. But not only was there no constable there, but no discovery had yet been made of the robbery" (Dickens 21). Not only did he assist a convict, but he robbed his family for him. Later on in the story, Pip finds out that Estella's mother, Molly was a murderer.
