Do you think that life is really what it seems? In the book Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, it expresses that life sometimes cannot be what it appears to be. Charles Dickens’s message throughout the book shows that no varnish can hide the grain of wood and the more varnish you put on, the more the grain will express itself. When Miss Havisham tries to trick Pip by giving him his apprenticeship that will make Pip lower class forever, Pip proves he can still stand out and become great.

Pip thinks and hopes that his benefactor is Miss Havisham that way he can court Estella. The convict he helped as a young boy, appeared to Pip and told him he was his informer. Pip is quiet agitated and frustrated with this information because that means that Miss Havisham is not the benefactor.
