Assumption Greek Orthodox Church

My journey to find the right museum or church, lead me to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Long Beach. I felt like this church might have more significance then a series of similar works displayed in a museum. My intentions were to find a good example of the gold stylistic trend that the Byzantine style has adopted. This motif, whether it is used to bring the imagery out from the background, or to show wealth, has a intellectual and psychological reaction and is only one of the many characteristics to Byzantine art. One reason they might be present here and not any other place in the church is because they represent important events of Mary, the birth of Jesus and Jesus’ and are important parts of history. The second reason for their possible presence stems in the luminosity of gold and how psychologically our eyes are drawn to its magnificence. The gold, not only gives depth to the figures illustrated, but also is such a strong and luminous feature in that sector of the room.
