For many years, despite the objective stance of journalism as a profession, American journalism has always been plagued with the preoccupation to uncover and expose sensational issues and intrigues about politicians in the American political 'arena.' Famous examples are the presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, who have become victims of contemporary journalism, which have delved deeply into the lives of the famous politicians in order to come up with additional information about their respective scandalous issues in politics.

formulating several guidelines in order to maintain objectivity and avoid sensationalism in journalism is essential, which will be enumerated and discussed thoroughly in this paper.

The first guideline that is needed to prevent sensationalism and maintain objectivity in journalism in general is that the journalist or reporter must have a clear perspective of the political issue that will be discussed. By asking one's self what should be the main focus of a particular political issue, the journalist will then be able to analyze whether a political figure is indeed essential to be included in the discussion of the said issue. This is a problem since most journalists deem it necessary to consult a politician with every issue being discussed to maintain an air of professionalism and validity. In truth, getting the opinion of a political figure will only further 'politicize' an issue and will make the politician more talked about than the issue itself.
