Gulliver's Travels: A Parody About Society and the Human Race

Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels is a parody about society and the human race. Swift uses satire throughout this piece to show his disdain for almost every institution in Europe. When Lemuel Gulliver stumbles upon an island full of disgusting human like creatures and majestic horses, he soon realizes that human beings are a senseless race with an ineffective system of governing themselves. The Horses represented Swift’s ideal society, with no conflict or corruption and the Yahoos showed how barbaric Swift believed humans to be. Clearly Swift had a problem with the way the world was functioning, and he believed that Gulliver’s Travels could open the eyes of the European people.

The Yahoos were the most troubling image. They represented the humans and portrayed their lack of characteristics defining civilization. Gulliver explained the Yahoos to have a hierarchy and also recognized their mating system. Everything these Yahoos did was corrupt and this paralleled human society. For example, the Yahoos leader was always the most mischievous and diabolical individual. And his assistants were chosen who licked his feet and his posterior clean. This system mirrors the Modern Day Government and how it is filled with corruption and evil. Swift is also critical of humans sexual appetite. The Yahoos aggressively pursue those they have lust for and force sex upon them. Illustrating how barbaric we humans are when we quench our sinful thirst with unnecessary sex.
