Gun Control In America Today


Gun control has been a controversial issue in the United States since the Second Amendment was added as part of the Bill of Rights in 1789. We will discuss the arguments, concerns, and convictions people have with gun control. We will also examine the rights of citizens based on the Constitution and the legal actions taken against this Amendment over the last two hundred years. The main ethical concern we pose is: Do citizens have the right to own a gun for protection and/or recreation? We believe that we have addressed this issue from both an ethical and legal viewpoint.

In 2007, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that current D.C. laws that prohibit the ownership of handguns within the District are unconstitutional. The case, Parker vs. District of Columbia , found that the residents of D.C. were being denied their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. In a similar case a year later, District of Columbia vs. Heller, the District of Columbia raised the question if they have the right to ban handguns while still allowing rifles and shotguns to be possessed within city limits.
