Some may view his art works as morbid, others may find his exhibition of plastinated human bodies as downright amusing, even ingenious. Realistically-portrayed in their natural colors, these human bodies are also re-constructed into artistic distortions of either the human skull or torso. These parts are opened (skull) or separated (ribcage) to display the body's vital organs, such as the brain, heart, and lungs. Von Hagen's works of body art are indeed a blatant display of the human body in its most naked state, yet scientific/objective state. While many people have objected to this macabre form of artistic display of dead human bodies, von Hagens' body art exhibitions continue to astonish its audience, be they artistically- or scientifically-inclined to these kinds of subjects (dead bodies) or not.
