Introduction

Habituation is a basic learning process exhibited by a number of different species. Although the paradigm itself is procedurally simple, it has been suggested that habituation may underlie a number of other learning phenomena. Indeed, Razran (1971) has suggested that the process responsible for habituation may be the basis of all other forms of learning.

Humphrey (1933) was one of the first to study the process of habituation. His procedure was very simple. He placed a number of snails on a glass plate. .We had an individual rat and we did experiments on the rats in their open field as a new stimulus. We place the rat in an open filed apparatus (a "new " stimulus) and measuring whether or not habituation occurs to this novel environment

Results

Rats are attentive to their environment and are aware of changes that are made. If placed in an entirely new environment, rats will not immediately take cover even if suitable sites are encountered, but rather will explore its surroundings first.

Discussion

A rat's normal response to a new and open environment is twofold:

1) A high incidence of exploratory behaviors, and

2) A tendency to remain near the protective walls and not to venture into
