Hamlet Madness

How are you able to tell if someone is truly insane? There are many factors in determining this and people also have many different reasons for being insane. In Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, there has been much speculation whether or not the main character, Hamlet, is insane or sane. However, there are far more reasons that show that Hamlet was mad and insane during the play. Hamlet’s bad family situation, seeing his father’s ghost, and murders show that Hamlet is truly mad.

his feelings towards them when he exclaims, ”That it should come to this.” He also feels very alone at this time and for that reason, he begins to contemplate suicide. Hamlet expresses his feelings at this time when he states, “O, that this too too solid flesh would melt/ Thaw and resolve itself into a dew!/ Or that the Everlasting had not fix’d/ His canon ‘gainst self slaughter! O God! God/ How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable,/ Seem to me all the uses of this world! (1.2.5) Not only does Hamlet express the idea of committing suicide in this quote but also, he shows how mentally and emotionally unstable he is. If Hamlet were sane at this point of the play, he would not be thinking about things such as suicide.
