What Hughes means in this line, people have to start realizing their dreams, because one day, they are going to die off.
The narrator said in line 7-8, “Or crust and sugar over -- like a syrupy sweet?” If someone left syrup, or something else sweet with a lot of sugar, in a cabinet or refrigerator, the bottle would have crust on the top of it and would not be useful anymore. Meaning, things would keep being piled on top of the dream and possibly forgotten about.
The narrator says in lines 9-10, “Maybe it just sags like a heavy load.” If someone was to carry a backpack with six thick books in it, up three flights of stairs, it would slow them down, because it is a heavy load. If one never realizes his or her dreams, then eventually it to will become a heavy load and slow them down. Making them wonder what could have happened if they realized their dream and followed it. Also making them angry and depressed.
