In the movie “Harold and Maude”, dark humor is expressed continuously through the use of irony, farcical suicides and attempted suicides in which they all never happen to be accomplished by the protagonist. The protagonist Harold maybe be described as a young independent and strange kid who is always attempting all types of suicide tricks to get some attention from people and especially from his mother. suicides seriously because she knows that Harold does it to get her attention and is just always trying to be plain silly. When the movie first begins, you see Harold fake hanging himself on a rope in which his mother doesn’t even look at him and walks in normally saying “I suppose you think that’s very funny Harold?”. Harold then seems disappointed because it seemed like he was expecting for his mother to get a heart attack by the thought that maybe Harold did really hang himself. Although, his mother in the movie shows how she knows him too well and never falls for any of his over dramatic suicides and tricks that he does just to get a bit of her attention.
