These books have captured the imaginations of adults as well as children. They have one undeniable feature critical to children's literature: children want to read them. at first, the Dursleys treat Harry quite badly, locking him in a closet under the stairs that also serves as his bedroom, speaking to him in humiliating ways, and treating him shabbily in every way possible. It's not that they are incapable of love; they dote on Dudley, who is quite spoiled but apparently encouraged to heap abuse on Harry as well.
