What is a hate crime? The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines a hate crime as a “criminal offense committed against a person, property, or society that is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin.” Congress put in place the Hate Crime Statistic Act of 1990. This law made the attorney general to collect data that had evidence of being motivated by bias of race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and ethnicity/national origin. Coming in second was religion with 16.4%, sexual orientation with 15.6%, ethnicity with 13.3%, disability with .8%, and multiple reasons with .2% of all types of hate crimes. This data is true as of 2004. As of 2008 race was at 51%, religion at 17.9%, sexual orientation at 17.6%, ethnicity at 12.7%, and disability at .9%. In the four years the statistics didn’t have any drastic changes in data.
Among race related hate crimes African Americans inflicted the most damage with 72.9% of all racially bias hate crimes being committed toward them. That’s a staggering piece of data. Anti-white bias hate crimes collected 16.8% of this type of hate crimes. That was the closest race to black that suffered hate crimes. That’s a really massive gap between races.
