Although the similarities between Joseph Conrad’s The Heart of Darkness and Francis Coppola’s Apocalypse Now are evident to those who are familiar with both works, there is actually a great deal of underlying difference between the film and the novel. However, Dorall continues deeper into abyss of interrupting these two novels by pointing out subtle variances. He first mentions the fact that the characters on the riverboat in the novel lack the depth and development of a true character. On the other hand, the film takes time and effort to develop each individual character on the patrol boat, thus creating some sort of personality that the audience can relate to and take comfort in. Dorall continues down into the darkened minds of both Kurtzs by citing the lures of man’s primal, animalistic nature, as the reason for colonial Kurtz’s shedding of civilization. However, it is the nebulous role of the American army in Vietnam, and the horrible attributes of war, that drive Col.
