In my opinion, I think that the African characters in Heart of Darkness are not presented as individuals but as stereotypes, and through stereotypes Conrad is saying the opposite of what Africans are or misjudging them. It is a negative that Conrad uses one country to make another look good. It is hard to say and the question that readers might ask is this "is presenting a nation in a negative way and patronizing people should be considered as a fantastic piece of art?". I think the novel is just presenting a nation showing how bad it is so that we compare it to the `better' nations.

Conrad main purpose I think is to show a vision of Africa rather than giving a description of its geography. Reading Heart of Darkness we are looking for the real Africa and we want to know how Conrad saw it through his own eyes. We can argue that his way of describing it is not a great one but in fact is his way and he has the right as a writer to write in his own way. Africans in heart of Darkness are seen as primitive, savages and inhuman. We can see that Conrad respects savages "clapping their hands, stamping their feet". Although this feelings are shown through Marlow, the one who observes the truth and the attach of the Congo.

In the story, Marlow often meets natives and those twenty cannibals. They travel in the jungle which shows that black people are dehumanized. The natives were treated bad and that made Marlow feel the horror.
