Hester’s Courage

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne relates a story about courage and the punishment of a woman, Hester Prynne. She was being humiliated and punished for breaking a Puritan belief against adultery. Courage, also known as fortitude, is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty or intimidation.
Hester demonstrate courage when she stayed in the Scaffold for hours, staying in Boston with her daughter rather than leaving and going to the Governor’s house to fight for the custody of her daughter.

Hester shows courage when she was thrown out of town with her baby, and she went to live in an isolation life in a cottage outside of the community. She could leave Boston, but she chose to stay rather than living, because she was not proud of her sin, but she admitted her rights and wrongs to herself and the society, while the other people lived in fear and hiding their sins in their hearts.
