Hidden Figures: Discrimination from the Discriminated

An unconscious bias is defined as the result of one's culture, personal experiences and societal stereotypes automatically influencing their judgements and assessments of people without them even realizing it. The problem with this is that groups of people are heavily generalized and put into a mold that only represents one restrictive perspective. They can be marginalized based on their gender, background, appearance and/or economic status, for the sake of a small percentage of people gaining control. because she chooses to further her education in order to become an engineer: "Kid needs to eat vegetables. You would know that, if you were home" (Hidden Figures). He is implying that she is failing at her duty as a parent because she is not fulfilling her societal-designated role as a stay-at-home mother. Females are viewed as the ones to do domestic work and raise children, while men are traditionally the ones to do the `real jobs' like the sciences and politics for a living. This is meant to empower the male sex because they make up all the positions of power in the government and the workforce, which gives them legal and financial superiority over the opposite sex. Furthermore, he is perpetuating the stereotype that women are not as intelligent as men and cannot handle the same level of education, as he says that she should be at home instead of at school. This goes back to the cliché that "Knowledge is Power", and is intended to make women unable to climb the social hierarchy ...
