way it was. The fear of Big Brother, or the conspiracy that the government was watching everything and everybody sparked a sort of rebellion in the homes of the American people. People felt controlled, and the forces looming above them were so powerful that they felt oppressed by their government. The United States was also at war with Vietnam, and hundreds of troops were dying on foreign soil. The draft shot fear into the heart of every American. Families were torn apart as young men from all over were forced into uniform and sent to fight. As soon as Americans realized the horrible truth about U.S. effort in Vietnam, anti-war protest began in the more progressive parts of the country like California. Along with anti war movements, a social reaction developed to the American lifestyle, government oppression, and materialist ideals.
