Other early models focused on developing computer programs that could use what we think of as common sense: the computer could detect smoke and call the fire department, for instance (Waltz, 1996). While such programs can be quite useful, it doesn't represent independent thought. A group in Edinborough may have come closer in 1973 when the developed a computer that used vision to find what it needed to assemble objects (Buchanan, 2002)
Today, AI works in the background of many programs in ways we may take for granted. For instance, a form of AI detects credit card and bank fraud. For instance, if a person accesses his or her bank records using one internet program, and then accidentally launches that same bank in a second internet program, the bank's computer may "conclude" that one or both of the attempts to access is fraudulent, and block the account from internet access.
