Home Burial: Analysis

B. Analyze the couple in Frost’s “Home Burial.” What has made them grow apart? How does this poem exemplify the Modernist period?
The couple in “Home Burial” is lacking the love that is found within solid marriages. The couple has obviously lost a few children together, yet the man feels that his wife should not be worried about their remembrance. Also the wife takes for granted that her husband may very well miss them too. She thinks that he is oblivious to their existence on the burial grounds. She may have in fact been right.
He then says: “The wonder is I didn’t see at once.
I never noticed it from here before. I must be wonted to it-- that’s the reason. The little graveyard ...

Right here he is saying that he should have just stopped having children with her. That people can not live with nor without sex. He’s eluding to the fact that in order for the children to be made in the first place they had to have sex. Also saying that he could make “arrangements which he’d bind himself to keep hands off,” simply meaning that he will find other ways to release his need to have sex and not to bother pushing himself on her. The next part of that entry pertains to love. The husband says that “two people who do not love each other can not live without them,” them meaning children. He’s saying that because they are not fully in love anymore and that they have no living children that maybe they shouldn’t be together, ...
