Gandhi’s first act of struggle that he launched in South Africa was in 1907. The non-violent revolt was against the background of the passage of the Asiatic Registration Act by the government of Transvaal in 1907. The act had proposed that all Indians and Chinese people were to register their presence in Transvaal by carrying passes and giving their fingerprints. Gandhi saw this as outright discrimination against all Asians. He told the Indian people to disobey the act and to start picketing major offices, in a non-violent manner.
