In 'How Male and Female Students Use Language Differently' Deborah Tannen argues that males and females have different styles of communication and that the style of classroom communication supports how males learn rather then how females learn. Tannen's major argument is that male and female students cannot be treated the same and that one classroom learning structure is not the most effective way to teach all students.
Tannen considers the different styles of communication of males and females and relates these to classroom learning practices. The areas considered include peer relations, participation and debate.

Tannen argues that the classroom situation is an environment where students are expected to fight for the opportunity to speak up and one where participation is considered a necessary part of learning. Tannen further argues that the classroom situation of having to speak up to a large audience and having to jostle for the opportunity to speak is better suited to males than to females.
A similar argument is then made relating to debate. Tanner describes the classroom as a place where debate is an expected part of learning, with debate often in the form of a challenge. The major example offered is the practice of reading learning materials and then discussing them by challenging them.
