The relation between gender and the material environment, the day-today objects that surround us, has recently enjoyed growing interest in the fields of cultural studies, gender studies, and social studies of technology (Horowitz and Mohun 1998; Rothschild 1999; Sparke 1996; Cockburn and Ormrod 1993; Cockburn and Fürst-Dilic 1994; Kirkham 1996; Lie and Sørensen 1996; Oudshoorn 1996; van Oost 1995). These studies contribute—each in its own way—to insight into the complexity and the myriad ways in which gender and material objects are related and mutually constitute each other.
