Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn deals with a young boy named Huckleberry Finn who fakes his death to get away from his father Pap. His father Pap is a drunk who beats Huck often and does not approve of him getting education. With faking his death Huck goes off on his own down the Mississippi River where he meets a runaway slave man named Jim. Throughout his novel, Twain develops an unlikely friendship between Finn and Jim. As the novel continues this friendship is strengthened through the discovery of similarities of characteristics the protagonists share.

by his father a countless number of times Huck figures that a good way to get away from him is to fake his own death. In doing so he runs away making his way down the Mississippi River where he meets Jim, Mrs. Watson's runaway slave. Jim had run away because he overheard his owner Mrs. Watson's trying to sell him away where he would be mistreated and beaten. Both are looking for a better life.
After the two collide on the Mississippi River, Huck is aware that Jim is a runaway and questions whether or not to help him, but being the person he is he decides to. Before helping him Huck makes fun of him, but he does not realize that what he is doing is hurting Jim's feelings. This brings him to the point where he understands Jim is a human just as he is and does not deserve to be treated any differently.
