As time changes, many things also change. We have to change things to better suit the current societal standards. We strive "to make the world a better place" to live in. But what happens if something from the distant past is a better way of doing something? Is it possible for us to take a step backwards, from which we thought was a step forwards? Our so-called "civilized nation" is rather an idea than a fact. What is civilized?

situations and we are appalled. Even if he or she is guilty, the citizens of this country cannot stand for this kind of punishment. This type of punishment is believed to be barbaric. We are civilized and mature, we are able to correct these criminals with other non-violent processes. Jacoby says "Imprisonment has become our penalty of choice for almost every offense in the criminal code." Yes, why is that? Can living in a barred cell in a correctional institute actually discipline someone? Many believe that it truly works. The prisoner will have time to ponder his or her thoughts, wrongdoings, and what he or she should be doing in his or her life. The prisoner will have plenty of time to thing about the past. But what about those criminals who take imprisonment as an easy way out? How can one perceive imprisonment from that point of view?
