Iago's Use Of Rhetorical Appears in Othello

Iago's clever use of rhetorical appeals in William Shakespeare's play, Othello, demonstrates that he is not only smart but also very intuitive when it comes to human nature. By appealing to Othello's logic, or logos, Iago convinces Othello that Desdemona loves him. When he appeals to his emotion, or pathos, he manages to convince him that he is primarily concerned with Othello's well being. When Iago appeals to Othello's ethics, or ethos, he is confirming Othello's emotions and validating his motivation for murder. Iago's technique illustrates that he is such an excellent judge of character he can cause another person to kill an innocent person.

his wife loves him. This technique cleverly removes Iago from any blame for planting any seeds in Othello's mind. Further more, he appeals to his logic later in the play, for the same reason. He tells Othello, "Look to your wife; observe her will with Cassio./Wear your eye thus: not jealous, nor secure" (III.iii.195-6). Since Othello mentions his suspicions first, Iago is technically off the hook. Winning Othello's logic is a crucial first step if Iago wants to manipulate him further in the play.
Another successful strategy of Iago's occurs when he appeals to Othello's emotion. He does this on several occasions by acting concerned about his well being. This is critical for Iago if he is to succeed with his plan. Iago goes to extremes when he promises to be loyal to Othello. He also says, "I am your own forever" (III.iii.477).
