The in history evolve over time and are altered in many ways. There are many factors that contribute to these changes such as the type of government, and the laws governing its people. As the laws change so too do the people living under the law. In early time, ancient law was instituted to protect the weak from the strong. In some cases this meant clearly defining laws for different levels of the caste system. Lower status citizens would have laws different from nobles and wealthy patrons, thus placing them in unequal standings with the law. Laws that pertained to people of lower than equal status, such as women, were even more vague and ambiguous. It was this ambiguity that made it difficult for women to advance in society.
The earliest known written law was from Mesopotamia under its king Hammurabi1. These laws were written on eight foot slabs of concrete and were explicitly defined. These laws that pertained to men, as well as women were laid out in a fashion that made them easy to distinguish. It was because of this that women were allowed to rise to more acceptable standings with their superior male counterparts, because of their knowledge of the law.
