Identity and Arab Culture

Identity is the condition of being oneself and not another. Defining identity can be a problem for some because they don’t realize how or what made them the person they are today. I know exactly where I get my moral and values from and the reason for them. I was born and raised in New Jersey, but mentally I was born in Palestine, where my parents are from. The reason why I state this is because Arabic culture and traditions are fundamental in my household. My family taught me to never be ashamed and always have pride that I am an Arab. Also, in the Arabic culture, women are quite different than men.

my family are housewives and barely finished their education. But for me, I have to be different.
I’m the youngest out of nine siblings and after viewing their marriage lives, I always knew that I’m going to be the one staying home, taking of the kids, while the husband is working. Time has changed, and now I will never view my future to be like that. A factor that holds my Arabic culture is that the language has to be spoken in the house and Islamic practices are a must. In Islam, women are expected to be modest with their personality and actions. I was raised to dress and speak appropriately and also watch my actions. Most of these factors are influenced by my parents who always taught me from wrong to right.
School is also an influence because I went to an Islamic private high school and everybody was basically the same. That school didn’t influence me to be like my surroundings, but it forced me to be different socially. I had a different taste in music and style, but ...
