The humanity of society emphasizes each person and the desire to find one’s true self; their identity. People want to find that one purpose in life and they seek and question this to find their answer. Daniel Defoe’s character, Robinson Crusoe and Foe’s character Susan Barton emphasizes their desire to find themselves as a castaway and as a survivor. Through the island and the experiences of other characters help and support the end result of who their identity is characterized as.

Another example that would add to his identity is the imprinted footprint in the sand on the island that works to symbolize Crusoe’s subjectivity. In that footprint, he thinks to himself as someone has just like his identity is also stranded on the island but he really see part of his identity in the footprint. Crusoe stranded on the island gives him a chance to fully discover his identity. Through his writings in the journal, the island offers his personal freedom to life.
Now comparing Crusoe to the Susan Barton from the novel called Foe, Susan Barton’s identity is portrayed as an unreliable narrator even though it seems like she narrates Foe.
