Ignatius of Antioch

Ignatius of Antiochus, also known as Ignatius Fororphus, was an early Christian writer and bishop of Antioch. To meet his martyr in Rome, Ignatius wrote a series of letters. This distance is now a major part of the collection of works written by the Apostolic Fathers. Unlike Clement of Rome and Polycarp, it is considered one of the three most important. His letters are examples of early Christian theology.

Early Days

The fourth-century church historian Eusebius Ignatius wrote that he came after him. Theodore of Sirius states that St. Peter himself ordered the appointment of Ignatius to the historical perspective of Antioch.

Bishop of Antioch

Between 105-106, the Roman emperor Trojan (53 - 117 AD) waged a successful war against the Dacians and Scythians. Thanking his gods for the victory, the Trojans launched a large campaign against the Christian community, especially in Asia Minor, especially the Christians who refused to sacrifice to the gods. While he was in Antioch, the Trojans interviewed Bishop Ignatius, who pleaded guilty and was executed by the Trojans.

Since Ignatius was an important man in the area, the Trojans chained him and sent 10 soldiers to transport him to the coast and to Rome. Antioch was a major port city, perhaps the most efficient route would be entirely by sea.
