The human body is fascinating subject for a creator and appreciator of the visual arts; to create the human form in accordance to the artist's style and interpretation of the subject greatly alters representation of the human body across cultures, as well as art media. One of the medium used to craft visual images of the human body in life-like forms is through ceramic-making. Pauline Hughes and Carole Windham, ceramic art creators, are known for their use and manipulation of ceramics and clay in illustrating the human body. to give the images a more earthy and human look. Windham, on the other hand, uses the glazing in order to bring about a glossy look at her colorful images of humans. Where Hughes illustrates the human body in its raw and naked form, Windham tries to infuse contemporary images of humans in the modern society, dresses up frivolously in bright colors of wide variety. What is ironic, however, is that despite her use of colorful tones in her ceramic images, Windham's creations portray the human form as distorted, where irregularities in the form contribute to the melancholic appearance of the image. Hughes, meanwhile, stays true to the technique and medium of her art works, which attains an objective appearance to her images, portraying them in less-than-emotional appearances, making her artworks blend with the 'environment' (the earth), which is where, as Biblical stories tells us, human beings came from.
