Introduction

This paper will discuss the results of an experiment conducted to determine if imagination can create false autobiographical memories conducted. The findings of the experiment will be discussed using information we have obtained through our classroom discussions, lectures and required readings.

The study examined whether imagining can create false memories in people. In the experiment, one group was told to imagine a relatively frequent event and also received information about another event that never actually occurs. concluded that the results were indicating that imagination could induce false autobiographical memories in their subjects.

Discussion

The results of the study showed that the participants developed both a belief in and a memory of an event that they never actually were involved in. This was accomplished through their imagination alone. From class discussions and readings we learned that memory interference can happen when be produced when misinformation is received after an event has occurred; delivered in either leading questions or in suggested descriptions. Source confusion, the blurring of which elements occurred in which episode, although in this case both imaginary, were consistent with the discussions concerning memory interference. In both types of memory interference, this type of "imagined" information could actually cause a person to develop memories of events that never actually happened at all, as seen by the results.
