transportation and communication systems were established. In India, roads, railroads, telegraph lines, bridges, canals, buildings, and massive irrigation projects helped modernize the country. Also, the Suez Canal was built. This was a faster way for the British to trade with Asia and Africa. Furthermore, it increased trade.
One last motive of imperialism was to improve the overall society. A change in the way people lived was a goal. After Japan modernized, the government set up schools and a university. As for women, some of them gained an education. Literacy increased, also. A benefit of British imperialism is that the British established a modern secondary education system. This helped staff lower level positions within the civil service. Upper class Indians were able to send their children to schools in England, which increased literacy rates.
