"All human sin seems so much worse in its consequences than its intentions" - Reinhold Niebuhr. Born into the world, Pearl is immediately portrayed as the direct result of sin, resulting from the intentions of adultery, by her mother, Hester Prynne. In, The Scarlet letter, Hawthorne classifies Pearl as the one blessing of her [Hester's] life, as well as an outcast to the rest of the Puritan society and brings shame to her mother. letter. In the forest scene when Hester takes off the Scarlet letter, Pearl becomes wildly disturbed and will not quiet down until Hester has it back on her dress. She is described, "But Pearl...now suddenly bursts into a fit of passion...throwing her small figure into the most extravagant contortions... In the midst of all, still pointing her small finger at Hester's bosom!" (189). Pearl is the result of Hester's adultery; therefore there is a parallel between her and the scarlet letter. When Hester discards the scarlet letter, it is almost as if she has discarded Pearl. The scarlet letter is a part of Hester, and so is Pearl. The only way Pearl is able to recognize her mother, is when she has the letter on. Another striking comparison between the two is that Hester enjoys dressing Pearl in red, which also happens to be the same color as the scarlet letter.
