Another way that Julia Alvarez may have related to the Rwanda genocide in her book is that the government had absolute control over the people. The government chose who was going to die and who was going to live. A couple of years before this book was published the US was in a war with Iraq. The war was called Operation Desert Storm. Once again a dictator had taken over and terrorized the nation. Saddam Hussein was Iraq’s dictator leader at the time. Trujillo and Saddam share many characteristics between each other. They both were dictators and both killed whoever was in their way of power. This made both men very dangerous.
