In the essay, , Joel W. Martin addresses the advantages to re-thinking and establishing our ideas about the history of Indians. In Martin’ opinion, in light of our postcolonial discoveries and altered ways of viewing our historical involvement with the Indians, we might come to many new conclusions about Indians on the whole, and in particular, their religious practices. Martin expresses this view early in his article as he writes; “We can progress from narratives that ignore uneven power relations to those that explain how these relations affected religious history and historiography. In a nutshell, this would mean a shift to postcolonial narratives.”

Martin discusses the uniquely cordial relationship between Creek Indian and white man as he writes, “…southeastern Indians, Africans, and Europeans learned to communicate across linguistic and cultural barriers, formed alliances, traded goods, exchanged ideas, constructed images of each other, and altered social and symbolic boundaries to accommodate that which was desirable or to restrict that which was not. Diverse peoples brought their cultures into contact, created a southeastern “middle ground,” and transformed one another as a result.”
Martin goes on, and on, and on trying to make the central point of his essay even stronger in the readers mind. Obviously, I feel he rambles a little too much to make a point that should not even be debated amongst a reasonable and educated group of people. The white American’s history with the Indian was, and still is in many cases, misconstrued due to a racist recording of that history. ...
