A magnificent work of literature written by Nathaniel Hawthorn in the 19th century was The Scarlet Letter. This novel explored the dramatic meaning of guilt and sin among the Puritans way of living presented in the 17th century. The main character that was forced to live in sham by displaying an extraordinary gold embroidered letter “A” (referring to adultery) upon her chest was Hester Prynne. And would that I might endure this agony, as well as mine.
