The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the short story "Intensive Care," by Lee Smith. Specifically, it will identify the author's attitude towards Harold & Cherry's relationship, and what it says about the meaning of the story.

Harold and Cherry's relationship is key to this story, even though Cherry is dying, and clearly the relationship has to change. has settled for an "average" and intolerably ordered relationship, and some is terribly missing in his life. There is no real love; there is only order and some affection. He mentions he cannot hug his sons, and it is a clue that he is emotionally lost, he has shut down his emotions, and they need to get out. Cherry is the one that brings out his emotions, which is why he loves her so much. "[. . .] but he will love Cherry Oxendine until the day he dies [. . .]" (Smith 783). She loves him because he is "nice," and he loves her because she brings out the best in him.
Love is the central theme of this story, and it transforms all the characters, not just Harold. Tammy Lynn thinks Harold is "about as interesting as a telephone pole" (Smith 780), but even she comes around when she sees how much Harold loves her mother.
