Invisible Man: Denial Of Education For Blacks

When one thinks of Brown verses the Board of Education, or the Black-faced Theatre, one thinks of the segregated South. These images could also remind one of the novel, Invisible Man, written by Ralph Ellison. This novel is a realistic depiction of American black life during the 1800s. It can be seen in many ways throughout the novel. One point is that the blacks were denied education. Another point is that the white race used the black people for their own entertainment and to fulfill the white man’s needs which are otherwise forbidden to them.

from the blacks, denying them of a proper education. “I am standing puzzled, unable to decide whether the veil is really being lifted, or lowered more firmly in place; whether I am witnessing a revelation or a more efficient blinding” (36).
Another point that shows a denial of education to the blacks is how the college gives the students an “education,” but when it all comes down to it, the college has taught the blacks nothing of the real world. The Invisible Man calls the college a “flower-studded wasteland” because he realizes later on in the novel that his time spent in college was useless. The college does not prepare him or anyone for the type of life they (the students) will encounter in the real world. The college only feeds the students simple clichés, rather than a true education.
